Name:: Wakefield Inn
Location: Wharton, Texas
Notes: Bill had found a hotel on the internet whose rooms were a series of teepees so that was our destination for today.
The day started off cloudy but quite warm. We wanted to make some time before the predicted rain hit us so we headed onto the interstate. The road is heavily patched in many places and is probably due for replacement.
At one point the highway followed a river or canal. This is not so unusual except the road was actually built on stilts in the water. I figure these waterways and swamps must be what they call bayou.
We crossed out of Louisiana and into Texas in the afternoon. Just before getting to Houston the rain finally found us. It was a heavy, drenching rain that lasted about 20 minutes. After that the sky went from cloudy to sunny and back again. Sometimes the sun was shining but the roads were wet. Other times the sky was ominous but the road was dry.
Traffic was heavy but moving fast in Houston. Luckily the sky had cleared and we had sunshine for the whole length of the city. Off to our right the sky was black and occasional lightning flashed. But we avoided the worst of that storm and only caught a small corner of it. But that was bad enough because it wasn’t just rain this time but hailstones too. It ended after about 5 minutes and out came the sun again. This time we could see that the sky ahead was blue and all the clouds were behind us. Then the wind came up.
We made it to the Teepee hotel about 4:30pm only to find out it was closed because it had gotten flooded during the hurricane and the rooms had not yet been renovated. Bummer. We carried on into town and found this tired but serviceable hotel. It had the most unique bathtub I’ve ever seen.
There was a Pizza hut across the road and that’s where we went for dinner.
