Gulf Coast trip
Sunday
10:08 PM

Location: Campeche, Mexico
Notes: At our hotel pool we met another couple from Canada- from Markdale, Ontario actually. They have a small farm there and were originally from Czechoslovakia. They have rented a car and are travelling around the Yucatan for three weeks.
In the evening we went to the main plaza where there was a movie played on one of the buildings
We’ve seen shows like this before. The first one was in France. This one told the history of Campeche. Afterwards we went looking for tacos and finally found some just outside the city wall near the malecon. For dessert we bought marqusitas which are basically a crispy crepe filled with nutella – good but not as good as churros !
Today was Sunday so it is family day. Mexicans usually congregate in the main square where vendors sell balloons and toys for the children and clowns put on a show. In Campeche, however, The Plaza Independencia has been usurped for the tourists and the locals are relegated to outside the old city walls.
The malecon was the same. The present governor has put a lot of effort.and money into beautifying the waterfront with waking paths, bike lanes and grass but it is empty. There are no little cafes or shady places for people to sit and enjoy the view. Except for a few tourists walking along the path there was nobody there.
