Rating: 2.0

Location: Valladolid, Yucatan
Entrance Fee: 400
Notes: At 9:30 in the morning we were the only visitors there. The gateman said to wait for 15 minutes for other people to arrive since there had to be at least six people for the tour. So we waited. No one came. Finally the gate man proposed that we pay entry for 3 people and he would let us go without the requisite number of people. It was overpriced but since we were already there and wanted to go, we paid.

It was a surprise to find out it was not a guided tour. The man just opened the gate for us and let us in. There was an audio tour in English that echoed in the caves to the point it was indecipherable. We walked the length of the cave that had obviously been filled with a river at one time. It was pretty similar to the caves we scuba dived in a number of years ago although this cave had been altered to make it safe for pedestrians. Where the roof was low, they dug the floor down. Where it was wet they put up barriers. I think our cenote dive experience was much more authentic.
