Notes: Edzna is an amazing site -so extensive! Apparently this is where a lot of Apocalypto was filmed and it is easy to see why. The site has had a lot of the structures rebuilt over the last 20 years or so. We were told that Guatemalen refugees were given employment doing the restorations. The signs told us that the original city covered some 29kms including residences in the outskirts. The structure on top of the tallest building was used for predicting the equinoxes and other astronomical occurences. The Mayans were really good at that!
As we wandered around we saw many hills of stone indicating there is much more to be found. Only the buildings deemed most important have been restored.
