Location: Calakmul, Campeche
Entrance Fee: 376 for two
Notes:
This ruin is located deep in the jungle about 1 hour 20 minutes from the highway. We really enjoyed the ride in because the road had lots of twisty turnies.
It is a bit of a trek through the jungle to actually reach the ruins. Many, many buildings have not been excavated but the principal buildings were restored between 1930 and the 1990s. It is hard to get pictures because the usual plazas have been left filled with trees.
Calakmul was inhabited between 300 bc and 700 ad.
It was a very important city during the preclassic period and was in a rivalry with Tikal. Because it is in the geographical center of the Mayan world the architectural attributes are influenced by both northern and southern cultures.
Bill insists on climbing the pyramids but I have chosen to keep my feet on the ground. It is a hot day and there is no shade on the slopes. The pyramid we are at now has buildings on the top and I wait while Bill explores them.
