Today we took the subway to down town. This is a brand new subway just opened in 2014. It is very modern and inexpensive to use. You buy a card for 2.00 and then recharge it with money. For instance Bill put 2.00 on ours and then used it to pay for both our fares. It’s a tap and go system that operates a turnstile. Very slick and fast. The old city in Panama has been left to disintegrate for many years so the buildings are mostly just street facades now. These have been stabilized and little by little the buildings are being restored to function. The good thing is that the architects pretty much can design from scratch and only need to integrate the facades. Some buildings have been restored and look beautiful. Others are waiting their turn. Many buildings that had not completely fallen apart are occupied as slums. The saddest buildings of all.Down by the water you can see old city on one side of a monument and new city on the other. Also from this spot you can see all the ships waiting to take the panama canal and far off in the distance the bridge of the Americas. We drove over that bridge coming into the city.We stopped at a pizzaria with some outdoor tables overlooking the bay to have drinks and a bite of pizza before making our way back to the B&B.
