When we arrived at the river it was hot and sunny, a perfect day to camp and swim. We set up camp and pulled off our riding clothes to don bathing suits. There was a place to enter the river not far from our campsite so we tried going there. We were able to get into the water but the water was shallow and very swift flowing so we couldn’t swim. However it cooled us off enough to go to the restaraunts for some lunch. After lunch we walked to the activity centre to ask about their cavern tour. They told us to come back in the morning because they couldn’t predict that the tour would go. It depended upon river conditions. If the water rose overnight the caverns would be flooded. It sure didn’t look like rain so we were pretty confident about getting the tour. Apparently there are batlike creatures living in the caverns that are the missing link between birds and bats.We walked a little further on and had a nice swim at a spot where the river bottom was smooth marble and sand. Very refreshing.I made soup for dinner and we got into our hot stuffy tent before dusk because we are in malaria country here. Our new tent is light and reasonably roomy but has zilch airflow. Most uncomfortable for the tropics. It stormed overnight. The rain started at 3:00am and didn’t let up until nearly 6am. The river swelled to 3 times its size yesterday, so of course our tour was cancelled.Although we had paid for 2 nights camping, we decided to not stick around. We packed our soaking wet camping gear and headed back on the road. hot, humid 31
