The second half of our tour took us to a remote village in the mountains where there is a steep trail down toward the river. The cliffs tower over the river and about half way up there were six beautifully preserved sarcophagi of the Chachapoyas people. There were several others that were no where near as elaborate in different niches on the cliff. Lower down there were stone cairns for burials A couple of them had fallen in a small landslide and the bones exposed on the ground below. Locals had collected them and left them on display at the side of the trail. The trail is so steep and rocky the local ladies earn some money by bringing the tourists back up on horseback. The thing that prevented me from doing this was that the little old ladies walked back up the hill leading the horse! If they can do it, so can I.
