We started off in the morning on a well maintained, dirt road that wound up through lush farmland in the mountains. After a couple of hours the road became single lane paved. We still had to be careful with the hairpin turns in case there was a bus or other vehicle approaching in the opposite direction. We were travelling with Doug, a bmw rider we met yesterday. We stopped in a small town for lunch and soon after the road wound steeply down the desert side of the mountain where a nasty wind tried to blow us off the road.At the bottom of the mountain when we crossed the river, the road became a gigantic washboard. We travelled for 3km on the bone jarring road and finally reached the 3n highway. After a few kms of single lane pavement, it widened into two lane and took us along a spectacular river valley through a series of tunnels. We were told that it used to be a railway line.We reached Caraz around 5 o’clock and found a hotel that had good parking for the bike.Doug had stayed in the Plaza talking to a bicycling couple. When we returned to the Plaza we all went to dinner together. The young woman, was from Iran and her partner, Clive was from Britain. He had been travelling for 3 years and she for 2. They were a lovely couple that we really enjoyed spending time with 286 Lakeview Lane Tweed, ON K0K 3J0 Overcast 10
