Isla del sol, Bolivia Av 6 de Agosto Copacabana The distance to the Island is not far but the tour boat took close to two hours to get us there. I can only think that there is a no wake policy because all of the tour boats were the same. Our guide Juan Carlos, led us up along the Inca trail and told us some of the Inca legends as we went. He told us how the Pre incans made the terraces covering the mountainsides in this area. They are 1000 years old and are still in use today. They help protect the hillsides from erosion because they can absorb water very well and slow it’s progress downhill. We walked 4km to the top of the hill where Inca dignitaries from all over the Inca world came to perform ceremonies designed to please the sun and moon gods so that the next year’s harvest would be good. There is a ruin up there as well. Archeologists think it was used as housing for the dignitaries and a temple for the priests. On the way down the mountain Bill bought a hat from a indigenous lady and I bought the best empanada I have ever eaten.
