Sunday morning we woke up to beautiful blue sky and bright sunshine so we decided we would take our trip to the Salt Flats today. Again we were in the mountains as we travel toward Uyuni. Beautiful stark mountains with lots of llamas and alpacas. We followed a river, a dry River bed really, because there was no water at all in the river. I don’t know how this area manages to keep going and if this is normal for this time of year or not but it is just so very dry. Some farmers had tried to plant crops of quinoa along the way and we could see the fields of quinoa but only about half of the field had germinated so the crop looked very sparse. After a time we could see in the distance what look like a pink Lake. As we approachedcloser we could see that this was in fact the Salt Flats. In Uyuni we met another motorcyclist from Guatemala and had lunch with him. We ate some salta??as which were really delicious meat pies. After lunch we headed out to see the train graveyard. There are a whole bunch of trains that have just been left to rot apparently from Venezuela. Simon Bolivar decreed this to happen apparently.Next we headed out to the Salt Flats. It was a very bumpy road and rough ride getting there and as we got out onto the salt flats it looked like ice at the end of the winter. The salt had cracked into cells that looked like geometric forms. The whole salt flat was covered in red Sand blwn out of the surrounding hills so everything look more pink than white. We drove out to the area where everybody’s stops to take pictures and we took the requisite pictures ourselves. I have posted a few of them here on this blog. Then we headed for home. I had quite a headache because I’m still suffering from this terrible head cold so bouncing around on that road was really really tough. We got home just as a storm broke, luckily we had gotten inside before it starts to really rain.
