It took a two hour ferry ride to get there and we only stayed for an hour but it was worth it. We saw the nesting grounds of the magellanic penguins. In February all the penguins born that year have already migrated to the coast of Brazil about 4000 km away. The adult males will follow at the beginning of March then a few weeks later the females leave. This has to do with the molting periods of the birds. The females are the last to molt as they take the longest to recover from laying and hatching the eggs.In September the males arrive at the nesting site and prepare the nest. A few weeks later the females arrive. Penguins mate for life so she goes to where her mate has prepared the nest. They breed and about 42 days later the chicks hatch. Many of the penguins we saw were just growing in their new feathers but a few were still trying to get rid of their old feathers.
