Name: San Juan Ulua
Location: Veracruz
Notes:: This fortress located right in the middle of a modern, bustling was originally built in the 1500’s as protection from pirates who might try to raid the warehouses of the Spanish. It was enlarged several time and included a palace that several presidents occupied over the years and prisons that were notorious for their decrepit conditions. Our
The building are very solid and have withstood time and hurricanes very well. The walls are mainly made of coral parged with stucco. Most of the stucco has fallen off to reveal the coral underneath. There’s a lot of brain coral. Our guide said that it made.good building material because it absorbed moisture during the wet season and kept the interior of the building cool during the hot season.
