Gulf Coast trip
Thursday
3:34 PM

Name:: After the Rain
Location: Hotel Ruis Cardenas, Tabasco, Mexico
Notes: We rode in the pouring rain for about an hour as we headed toward Cardenas on the quota highway. It was expensive on the cuota (189 pesos) and there was a lot of bad roads and construction close to our destination.
We did the last 100 kms on the free road and thankfully the rain stopped.
We stopped at this run down but reasonably clean hotel named Hotel Ruis with a jovial owner who I think is probably named Ruis. It is located in el Centro of the town which is why we chose it. It gives us more chance to get out and walk than a hotel out on the highway .
Our first task was to go find some food. I requested chicken so we found a chicken fast food restaurant. It was very good with a garden salad and macaroni salad. Then we went for a walk.
This small city is not at all a tourist town. All of the stalls and attractions are geared for Mexicans. The one thing we sure weren’t expecting to see was ice skating! Yes they have set up an ice skating rink in the middle of their main square and a place to rent skates. I was surprised at how well many of the kids could skate for being in the middle of Mexico. We wondered how they could possibly keep ice frozen in 20C weather but when we walked around behind the rink we found out how. A massive, portable ice plant with pipes coated in ice leading to the rink. Interesting.
