Gulf Coast trip
January 19
11:08 AM

Name:: Hwy #180
Location: Tabasco to Campeche, Mexico
Notes: It was time to leave the cuota highways behind so we headed straight north to the coast on a secondary road that took us through many small villages. The land around here is very low and many fields that look like green grass are actually covered with shallow water. It was strange to see the cattle up to their knees in water as they grazed.
The houses here are below the surface other the road and often seemed to have water in front of them. Unfortunately this is also where they tend to dump their garbage. Not pretty.
Once we reached the coast the fishing villages began. Interspersed with them are oil refineries. Ciudad del Carmen is quite a large modern city because of the proximity to the refineries.
The road infrastructure here is also very good. A series of bridges and causeways connect a string of islands to create a straight route along the Gulf Coast.
As we were leaving Ciudad del Carmen I spotted a man on a small motorcycle with an enormous fish hanging off the back. It was so big that it’s tail was dragging on the road.
