Name: Mural town
Location: Cherán, Michoacán
Notes: On our way home we took some pictures of the many murals in this town. This area is controversial because in 2011 the people of this town ran off illegal loggers belonging to a drug cartel, the corrupt police who were enabling them and even the crooked local politicians in order to take on their own self government called Ronda Comunidad. They placed check points in and out of town that are manned with machine gun toting young men in kahki.
Apparently they have been very successful in quelling the violence and safeguarding the forests that are so important to their economy and that of the surrounding towns.
