Leaving Matehuala, 8:29 AM
Weather: Sunny
Temperature: 14C
Notes: We had to wait for a guy to move his car so we could get out of the parking garage of our hotel. They really pack it full at night.

Notes: Hwy 57 is a very busy trucking route. Divided 4 lane, and boring but we are headed for the mountains and some more interesting riding.

Eats, 12:23 PM
Weather: Sunny
Temperature: 28C
Notes:  We stopped for lunch in a town called Rayón at one of the ubiquitous food stands that are to be found in any small town along the highway.  I ate beef milenesa and Bill had gorditas chorizo. We shared an horchata that was one of the best I’ve tasted.
Name: Gorditas Doha Liva
Cost: 120 mx

This dog, who has been begging for food, is in the process of having puppies. She has already dilated and the placenta is beginning to show. I’m surprised she’s not holed up somewhere.

Gassing up, 3:23 PM
Weather: Sunny
Temperature: 38C
Name: Pemex
Cost: 348.40mx

Notes: Crazy hot ride especially since we took a wrong turn and the roads were terrible.  Bill thought that he was taking a nice twisty turny that we had been on before, but somehow it was not the right road.  We saw lots of interesting Mexican countryside, but the road just kept getting worse and worse with potholes and loose gravel.  Finally we had to study the map and find a way to get back on a more well travelled route.  I think we both lost weight with the amount of sweating we did.  Our riding suits are actually keeping us cooler than we would be with bare skin.  It is SO hot!

Day ends a little short of Destination, 5:03 PM

Weather: Hot
Temperature: 39C
We were headed for Xilitla on some secondary roads through the hills but neither gps was keen on a route. We tried to force it by setting way points and ended up on a bone jarring unpaved road that was not going to get us to where we wanted to go.  We had already spent the morning lost on terrible roads, so in an uncharacteristic move, we turned around and went back to Sta. Catarina to take an alternate route. It was very hot and we decided to stop here in Jalpan de Serra, about 100km short of our original destination. We will make up for it tomorrow by taking a toll road for part of the day.

Accommodations, Jalpan de Serra, 7:53 PM
Name: Hotel Maria del Carmen
Cost: 930

Notes: This was the second hotel we tried, the first being well out of our price range. Even this one is more than we budgeted for today. Had the opportunity to camp but opted for a room with a bed and indoor plumbing. Has a pool too albeit not a very clean looking one. Lots of Mexican families using it though. Apparently they are not put off by murky water. We did go for a short dip.
