Special Attractions  10:09 AM

Weather: Sunny

Temperature: 38C

Notes:  We have been to Merida so many times that there are few touristy things that we haven’t already done.  Although we have enjoyed many cenotes, we had never gone to Homun where apparently the BEST cenotes are.  Today we will find out.

We arrived in the pueblo and drove up and down the main street.  There were several signs advertising excursions to the cenotes.  We chose one on the outskirts of the town and traded in our motorcycle for a tuktuk!

BalMil cenote, 11:05 AM

Cost: 60mx

Notes:
Our first cenote. A very long staircase led down to the water. The original hole was a small one nestled in the tangled roots of a tree.

Cenote Hooolkosom, 12:24 PM

Cost: 60mx

Notes:
This cenote was an almost round cavern with a huge hole in the middle letting in the sun. Underneath the hole to the sky was the rubble from when the top caved in. The cenote water is home to catfish and the cavern above has bats and cave swallows swooping around.

Eats, 1:15 PM

Weather: Hot

Temperature: 38C

Notes: There is a restaurant at the entrance to the  BalMil cenote and we were getting hungry.  Our guide recommended the Cochinta pibil,  which we ate with beer.  Still not my favourite food and there was way too much food.  Should have shared a plate.

Cost: 290.mx

Title:
Cenote San Antonio

Cost: 70mx

Notes:
This cenote didn’t have any large opening to the sky and actually was an underground river.  It was located in a courtyard.  Once inside there were kayaks to rent to explore a little further than one could swim but we didn’t. The tunnels were lit with electric lights but I didn’t want to think about what it would be like if the lights went out!

Guide Ricardo, 8:25 PM

Cost: 300mx

Notes:
Ricardo talked non stop throughout our tour. Bill seemed to be able to keep up with him but I found my brain just got too tired. Luckily I didn’t have to answer too much. He was very informative and kept teaching us Mayan words.

On the Road,  8:37 PM

Weather: Hot

Temperature: 40C

Notes: The drive home was crazy hot. The gps took us right through the middle of the city in stop and go traffic. I don’t know how Bill can stay so alert in these conditions. I was nearly fainting.  It has been a good day though.  The water of the cenotes was cool and that fact that they are in caves means you don’t have the sun beating down on your head while you swim.  I don’t know if these were the BEST cenotes I’ve ever been to, but I do know they were fun.
