Gassing Up  8:54 AM

Weather:Sunny

Temperature:18C

Name:Orsan (pemex) Cost:430.89

Notes:  We took the infamous route through the mountains from Palenque to San Cristobal.  This route takes you through Zapatista country where, in some of the villages ,you get stopped to pay a ‘toll’.  We checked online before going and it seemed there were no checkpoints like this active.  In fact we didn’t see anything in the villages except in one small village where a couple of young girls had a string across the road.  As we went by they were engrossed in some game that had their attention away from the road.  We were past before they were able to pull up their string.  I’m not sure what they wanted from people, or if it was some game they were playing, ‘just like the grownups’.

The road took us through some beautiful scenery and the weather got blessedly MUCH cooler as we went up.  In fact we decided to go to San Cristobal this trip because usually we are in Mexico in the winter and it is downright COLD up there!

Accomodations, 12:42 PM

Name:Jardine de Luz    Cost:750mx

Notes:This hotel attracted us because it had indoor parking and a bit of a garden. We went around the block a couple of times trying to get into it as all the roads are one way and we missed it the first time around. Our room is small and faces the interior but is clean and otherwise adequate. Don’t need air conditioning tonight.

Eats – Lunch, 1:38 PM

Weather:Cloudy

Temperature:17C

Name: Cocina Economica ”Lulu”

Menu:  Pork stew, rice, tamarind, horchata   Cost:200mx

Notes: We ate lunch on a terazza not far from our hotel. We both chose the guisado puerco which is pork stew. In this case however it was two large chunks of tough pork in a sauce. Good flavour but really hard to chew. Not my favourite.

Around San Cristobal, 4:30 PM

Weather: Rainy

Temperature: 17

Notes:We walked around El centro for a while, looking for the main square. There are several parks kind of interconnected and a church just about everywhere . Strangely they were all under renovation . Bill wondered if last year’s earthquake might have damaged them.I bought a pair of amber earrings from the artesenal market as my souvenir from San Cristobal.  We went into a cafe for frappachino and a beer. Just as we were finishing the first drops of rain began to fall. By the time we paid, it was pouring.  We waited for a little while but the more it rained the deeper the rivers on the roads were getting so we braved the rain and made it to our hotel.

Evening in San Cristobal, 9:05 PM

Weather:Cloudy

Temperature:16C

Notes:Took another stroll to the main square to see the night life. There was electro music in one of the parks and indigenous dancers in full costume in another. It was too dark to take pictures of them. The venders were setting up in long rows on the large terazza in front of the main church. None of them had tables, just tarps on the ground to lay their wares on and battery led lights to illuminate them.

Purchases Beer, water  Cost:27mx
