Attraction: Diamond Mine Ghost Town  8:45am

Location: Kolmanskuppe, Namibia

Notes:  This town boomed in the early 1900’s when people discovered diamonds here.  It is said that the local people would search for the diamonds on moonlit nights because they could easily see them glinting from the sand in the moonlight.  Soon the area was bought up and German owned.  They built houses with the proceeds of the diamonds.  Many workers tried to smuggle diamonds out in various ingenious ways that are documented in the small museum on the site.  You can walk through some of the abandoned buildings that are slowly being taken over by the desert.

On the road

Location: Namibia C 13 hwy

Weather: Partly cloudy Temp: 26C

Notes: OMG what a road. Washboard, sand, gravel, and whatever else. Bill started out fishtailing everywhere, but  little by little he found the right speed for himself and soldiered on. We made it to this shade. Actually there is a farm house right here and a windmill pumping water. But we are basically in a desert.

Eats – Lunch, 1:51 p.m.

Location: Helmeringhausen Hotel, Namibia

Weather:Clear Temp: 26C

Notes: Lunch break was welcome! We both had a ham and cheese sandwich and shared an apple cake. We also bought 2 bottles of water.
We have spent the whole day on a dirt road. The last section from our rest stop started out not too bad but after about 5 kms we were back to washboard. Later, as we passed between some low mountains, the road became very sandy. It was hard packed so was fairly smooth, however the dips in the road were often soft. The worst was right before we got into town because there was a grader working on the road.

Accommodations  5:16pm

Location:  Burghhof Goat farm, Namibia

Notes: The driveway in was long, sandy and torturous. Bill took his time and we arrived safely.

Such a beautuful place, with a lake in the middle of the desert and a selection of domestic and wild animals. The wild ones were rescues and we were there in time for their evening feeding.
Our cabin overlooked the small lake and had a nice patio, however we had no time ro enjoy it. We showered, had a beer and then it was dinner time. We ate a delicious buffet meal and I went to our room and got ready for bed. Slept like a log untul 2am, Bill was making unhappy sounding hooting noises. I patted his arm and he stopped. I think the stress of the day was escaping in dreams.
