Weather: Clear Temp: 23C

Notes:
Walked around Alexandria a little bit and went to see the Coptic church of St. Mark.

There is lots of security to approach the church because a suicide bomber detonated himself in the church a few years ago.

Title: Pompey’s Pillar

We walked through the city to get to this ancient ruin.

The pillar was erected around 300ad but the ruins are very much older. This was called Serapeum, an acropolis to Alexandria’s patron god Serapis. In the 1st century AD christians began to destroy all the old temples to the pagan gods and this one was pretty much obliterated. In addition to the pillar there is a good example of a sphinx.

There are apartment buildings all around here. It seems weird that people look out on these ruins every day, while visitors come from far off places to see them.
