Location: Santa Clara de Cobre, Michoacán
Notes: While we are in the Patzcuaro area we plan to visit the small villages that are close by. Many of the villages in this area specialize in some sort of handicraft or industry.
Our first foray is to Sanata Clara de Cobre. Cobre means copper. Because of the copper deposits in the surrounding mountains and their mining, this town developed coppersmithing. (This is due to Franciscan Quiroga’s work during the 17th century to help the indigenous people develop marketable skills.)
We visited the copper museum and bought bracelets in the market. We never did see anyone actually making anything out of copper in the village so my guess is as good as your as to where the copper pots, bracelets, vases etc. were actually made. Hopefully in Mexico at least!
