This Monastery is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was built in the 12th century and continued to be inhabited well into the 19th century.Inside there are two coffins- one is for King Pedro and the other contains his mistress Ines De Castro. The story has it that Pedro married Ines’ sister but was really in love with her. When the sister died, he married Ines but his father killed her because he was afraid that her family was becoming too powerful. Both coffins have been vandalized by the invading French during the 1800s.This building is huge and once housed an amazing library. It was home to hundreds of monks, their cells are now empty and falling into disrepair and are closed off to visitors. There is an amazing kitchen in surprisingly gly good repair.
