I did some research last night about the condition of the road. There were conflicting reports but seemed to say that the road was dirt from Huaraz to La Uni??n, then paved thereafter. Not so!We travelled on a two lane paved highway from Huaraz to Huallanca where we had lunch. The route took us up to 4 800mts, well above the tree line. There were many small farms and a few huge mines up there. I was fascinated by the thatch roofed stone houses with their adobe and stone fences. The road into La Uni??n was unmaintained dirt as well as the road out. Once on the 3N again we discovered it was a paved single lane road. However it was old, unmaintained pavement full of potholes. Numerous landslides had also taken out the pavement in some sections, leaving a rocky and rutted dirt surface. Not only did we have to watch for oncoming traffic on the single lane road, Bill also had to pick his way among the numerous deep potholes in the old pavement or large rocks in the sections that were no longer paved at all. Then there were the herds of sheep, goats, cows and their shepherds to avoid on the road, as well as the many dogs whose greatest joy in life seemed to be chasing motorcycles. (We clocked one chaser at 35km per hour.) Then throw in the fact that much of the trip was over 3800mts high, sometimes as much as 4300mts and you’ve got a pretty strenuous day of riding. The scenery was stunning though, as we followed valleys full of green farmland with small fields surrounded by bushes or stone and adobe fences. We were about 40kms away from Huanuco and totally exhausted when we were pulled over by the cops.I had just snapped a photo of an interesting rock outcropping when we were stopped. They asked us where we were going and where we came from. Bill told them, then said we were from Canada. They seemed impressed then told us we had to take a picture of Corona del Inca, then pointed to the rock outcropping. I got off the bike and took the picture, then one of the cops wanted to take another picture with both Bill and I. We got the other cop to pose with us. (These pictures are on the camera so I’ll have to transfer them here once they are in dropbox)
