Location: Tupataro, Michoacán
Notes: Bill wanted to see this town because there is an artist renowned for making statuary out of maize stalks and a paste made from some kind of orchid bulb. This is a very old tradition of the Perépetuas of this region who first made idols of their own gods then were taught by the Catholic priests to make religious icons.
As it turned out the Centro Cultural was closed, but we did get to see this very old temple from the 1500’s. We were requested to not take pictures inside so we didn’t, however there are many available on the internet.
The woman who was in attendance in the temple explained that everything that looks like gold is actually gold. The whole wall behind the alter was covered in this gilt. The ceiling has never been renovated, only carefully cleaned. It is completely.covered with painted scenes from the bible of the life and death of christ. Spectacular! Well worth the trip here.
